Until recently, literature on children’s competence assessment was limited. Two reviews [ 1 , 10 ] summarize the empirical literature on children’s competence to consent in research and treatment settings. A variety of different definitions and measures emerge from studies on children’s competence. Two quantitative instruments, namely the Competency Questionnaire – Child Psychiatric (CQ-ChP) [ 13 ] and the Hopkins Competency test (HCAT) [ 14 ], were examined, and some other authors (e.g. [ 15 ]) used semi-structured interviews. Only Weithorn’s interview [ 15 ] examined all four sub-domains of competence (see below).

Indeed there are a few places where nudity and shame are mentioned together (tho shame of nudity is not given God’s approval that I’m aware of), and one specific situation where exposure was prohibited (Exodus 20:26, 28:42) but this was not a general prohibition. Also there are places where nakedness is referred to in a figurative sense, meaning sexual intercourse (Leviticus 18) and in one case “seeing a man’s nakedness” is thought to be a euphemism for sexual intercourse with that man’s wife (Genesis 9). But in no case is the Bible’s mention of shame and nakedness prescriptive, but descriptive. I believe that as Adam learned shame (or fear) of nakedness from the serpent (i. e. the Devil), mankind’s shame and fear of nakedness has always arisen not from his sense of morality but from his baser instincts, and as such, and because of its negative impact, I think we ought to teach against it as something unhealthy.

This couple of elitists with their prescriptions on how to treat a child, which everybody is just supposed to accept without question (or be called a criminal) reminds me of the teachings of certain highly oppressive, judgmental religious leaders who claim to have a monopoly on the truth, and are very quick to condemn anybody who disagrees with them. They typically give no real justification for anything they say, list no references to any authority on the matter, not even religious authority such as the Bible and certainly not scientific authority. I have seen many people hurt by such religious teaching, and I’ve also seen such false teachers caught doing the very things they preached against. I stay away from such people and their teaching, but I worry about their victims, who don’t recognize the lies and the danger.
